Questions
Do I need a sitemap?
Small, well-linked sites can do without one, but a sitemap helps search engines find new and deep pages faster.
How many URLs can a sitemap hold?
Up to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB. Larger sites split it into several files with a sitemap index.
Where should I put it?
In your site's root folder, and list it in robots.txt with a Sitemap: line.
Which pages does the crawl include?
Pages on your site that answer normally and may be indexed: we follow links from your homepage, obey your robots.txt (as CubDomainBot), and leave out pages marked noindex and pages whose canonical address is another page. Last modified dates come from your server, where it sends them. We fetch at most 2 pages a second, so large sites take a while — up to an hour for 5,000 pages; you can run 5 crawls an hour.
